In a historic moment on the 5th of September 2020, thousands of South Africans both locally and internationally stood in solidarity to bring about meaningful change in our country.
Dressed in black and white, carrying their grievances on carefully written signs, the peaceful protestors sought to highlight issues plaguing our society, such as corruption, indirect elections, poor leadership, unemployment, farm murders, and Gender-based violence among other social concerns.
Growing in numbers
Over the past eight weeks, Move One Million’s Facebook group has grown to over 566 000 members, they have also garnered support from over 20 countries internationally, thanks to a global awareness campaign aimed at pushing back against corruption and promoting direct elections – a new electoral system that will allow us to elect and hold our leaders accountable in the very near future.

During this time, Move One Million has partnered with many organisations that share their values of transparency, good governance, integrity, respect, and unity, in an effort to strengthen our nation.
“We have established a presence in a number of townships and poorer communities across the country, meeting and speaking with our people in an effort to discuss the harsh challenges they face, show them they are not alone, we are fighting for them and together we hold the power and can bring about real change.” – says Move One Million founder, Jarette Petzer.

“We have met with hundreds of our supporters from various communities including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, and Port Elizabeth, sharing our vision and connecting with our people on the ground.”
“We have activated hundreds of field representatives both locally and abroad and built an operational hub which we are currently in the process of fine-tuning in order to create maximum ground awareness and operational efficiency. Many of these groups across the country have taken it upon themselves to now work with disadvantaged communities within their areas both in terms of creating awareness and in feeding programs.”
The grassroots movement enters phase 2
Jarette credits the success of the Move One Million movement thus far to the ordinary South Africans who have offered their time, expertise, and financial support towards the grassroots movement.
“All of this was made possible by the incredible support of our various teams working tirelessly behind the scenes as well as the incredible generosity of our members who have put us up in their accommodation, fed us, and financially contributed toward our first fundraising campaign on BackaBuddy that raised over R186 075.28.” says Jarette

As the Move One Million gears up for a second demonstration on 24 October 2020, ahead of the next elections, the organisation is once again reaching out to South Africans for support. Almost R20 000 has been raised thus far.
“We are about to enter phase two of the preparation for our next upcoming global event on the 24th of October 2020. We once again call on support from members to assist us with our travel, campaigning, marketing, and communications leading up to the event by donating to our crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy “ – says Jarette.

“It would appear that we have captured the imagination of South Africa and the world, the attention of our politicians, and the support of our South African Police Services. Once again, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us thus far. We call on each of our members to remember to go out and do a random act of kindness for those in need. First, we win their hearts, then we win their minds.” adds Jarette
