Gary Kirsten Foundation to build ‘Centre of Cricket Excellence’ in Cape Town

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Gary Kirsten Foundation is planning to end off 2020 on a positive note, with the construction of the ‘Centre of Cricket Excellence’ Indoor Centre to uplift the community of Makhaza in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

This Indoor Centre, which is the first of its kind, along with the recently built Artificial Cricket Oval at Chris Hani Secondary School, will become the high-performance hub of all Gary Kirsten Foundation activities and township cricket in the region.

The Centre will comprise a 3-lane practice net facility and provide a world-class, all-weather facility for players of all ages and their coaches to hone their skills without leaving their own community.

Along with the artificial field, the Indoor Centre will:
  • Provide all year round access to cricket coaching all schools in the region, especially those without their own sporting facilities.
  • Become a centre of learning and training for coaches, educators and players.
  • Provide access to tablets and free WIFI connectivity for all learners, coaches and educators.

Upskilling coaches

The GKF Indoor Centre will also serve as a ‘Coaches Training Centre’, where township coaches serving the Foundation and beyond will go through the ‘CoachED’ programme as well skills development training programmes.

These programmes provide life-long technical cricket coaching skills as well as life-long professional skills, ensuring they continue to design and lead the GKF sporting programmes in the township, while building skills that will empower them to build income sustaining cricket coaching careers.

Gary Kirsten has a passion for the development of sporting talent in South Africa. South Africa has a rich sporting culture and has produced many great cricketers, however there is a lack of Black African cricketers being represented in the South African domestic, first-class and international cricket structures.

Cricket Clubs and schools located within township areas are central to the success of aspiring youngsters who wish to become professional cricketers.Unfortunately the general state of outdoor practice facilities in these areas are currently not able to provide for the needs of aspiring township cricketers or youngsters who are interested in the game of cricket.

The Gary Kirsten Foundation is proud to be actively working on various projects in the community. From net installations and coach development for the township cricket development initiative , to planning South Africa’s 1st complete artificial cricket field, developing a groomsmen training programme and community sports hubs.
