On Sunday, 18th October, a devastating blaze ran through the Free State, destroying an estimate of 100 000 hectares of farmland around Hoopstad, Christiana and Hertzogville.

The fire that allegedly began during a service delivery protest in the Tokologo municipality also claimed the lives of hundreds of livestock and left local farmer, Tewie Nel (25), in critical condition, fighting for his life at Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein.

When the fires crossed the border from the Northen Cape hundreds of hectares of grazing land in in the Majeng and Hartsvallei areas near Warrenton were also scorched.

Thankfully the fires have since been contained and relief efforts have begun as farmers return to their homesteads to assess the full extent of the damage.

To support Free State Agriculture, Agri Northern Cape and Agri North West in rising from the ashes, Elsa Esterhuizen, a presenter from GROOTplaas on KykNET has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy alongside her team.

Thus far over R100 000 has been raised towards their fundraising target of R500 000 to assist the farmers in the Free State, Northen Cape and North West with their most urgent needs.

Donors who contribute towards the fund will also be eligible for a Section 18a tax certificate.
