To date, the SABMR has helped save the lives of nearly 500 patients with life-threatening blood disorders by matching them with healthy, unrelated bone marrow donors from South Africa and the rest of the world.
According to SABMR, Sustainability Portfolio Manager, Kamiel Singh, there are currently only 74 000 donors registered on the site to cater to over 57 million South Africans.
Unfortunately for a 6-year-old boy living in the Western Cape, a local donor has not been found and the search for an international donor has begun in order to save his life.
To assist the SAMBR in R350 000 to cover the cost of the international donor, which is double the cost of finding a local donor, Actor/Producer, Francois Rautenbach has lent his support to the cause.

“The greatest gift of all, is the gift of life and we need your help to give a South African child a second chance at life. During our ‘Give a Little, Save a Life’ campaign you can make a once-off donation of R100 or more, and as you contribute towards this cause. You also stand a chance to win some incredible prizes worth the value of more than R100 000.” – says Dr Charlotte Ingram
Currently, there are 36 million registered donors worldwide and counting. However, Bone Marrow is related to heritage; because of our mixed inherited diversity, each patient has a 1 in 100 000 chance of finding a suitable donor match. There are always patients who need a donor.
“Sadly, there are patients who lack the financial resources to cover the donor-related costs of a bone marrow transplant. Therefore, the SABMR’s new Patient Assistance Programme was developed for South African patients in need of a stem cell transplant from a matched unrelated donor but who do not have the financial resources to formally activate their donor search. Our goal is to ensure that every adult and child referred to us, can have the best chance at getting that life-saving transplant to lead a full life.” – says Dr Charlotte Ingram

Become a Bone Marrow donor
“Every year, hundreds of South Africans with blood diseases such as leukemia reach the point where their only chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant. For about 30% of patients, a matched donor can be found in their own family; for the other 70%, their only hope is to find a matched unrelated donor identified by the SABMR.” – says Sustainability Portfolio Manager at the SABMR, Kamiel Singh.

“Bone marrow related diseases is not a mystery, it is a solvable challenge. There are however many patients in need of stem cell transplant to offer them the best chance of survival. The solution: we must get everyone in the world on a registry to give them the best chance. Starting in South Africa.” – says Dr Charlotte Ingram
