Born premature, ‘Miracle man’ Kristiaan (4) needs help hearing

Weighing only 1.2 kgs, Kristiaan Coetzee (4) from St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, was born premature at only 29 weeks. As he was struggling to breathe, he was placed in Neonatal ICU at Queenstown provincial hospital, where he spent the first 32 days of his life.

With his mum, Lilani Coetzee by his side, Kristiaan endured countless blood transfusions and fought recurrent infections. Defying all odds this little champion made it through.

Help to hear

Today Kristiaan is a happy, healthy and energetic young man, but has difficulty hearing and speaking clearly.

Upon doing tests, Kristiaan’s audiologist, Dr. Kelly Schroeder discovered that he presents with ‘mild to moderate’ hearing loss in his right ear and ‘moderate to moderately severe’ hearing loss in his left ear.

To cover the cost of the bilateral hearing aids and extensive speech therapy he will need to ‘hear his loved ones’, single mum, Lilani, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy, as she can’t afford medical aid.

Appealing to the public for support, over R52 000 has been raised on BackaBuddy with contributions from 47 generous donors both locally and abbroad, towards their fundraising target of R100 000.

“In his short life, Kristiaan has faced so many obstacles, but he is our miracle man, he always pulls through. I just want him to have the opportunity to catch up with his milestones, attend mainstream school and lead a normal life. I can’t put into words how grateful we are for everyone who has contributed towards our BackaBuddy campaign and the love and support we have received from our community” says Lilani
